7 Truly Free VPNs with Strict No-Logs Policy (That Actually Work in 2026)

Most free VPNs are creepy. They might not ask for your credit card, but they take something far more valuable: your browsing history, your IP address, and your bandwidth. Then they sell it. We tested over 20 free VPNs to find the ones that actually respect your privacy. Only 7 made the cut.

Why a "No-Logs" VPN Matters (More Than You Think)

A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a remote server. But what happens on that server? If the VPN provider keeps logs—records of the websites you visit, the files you download, or your real IP address—then your privacy is an illusion.

No-logs means:

We distinguish between zero-log (a marketing claim of logging nothing at all) and no-logs (logging minimal operational data that cannot identify you). True zero-log is technically impossible, but a verified no-logs policy with an independent audit is the gold standard. As the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) emphasizes, privacy policies must be verified, not just promised. We rejected any VPN that couldn't prove its claims.

Our Testing Methodology (Transparency is Key)

We installed each VPN on Windows 11 and macOS. Here's exactly what we checked:

Top Pick

1. Proton VPN — Unlimited Data & No Ads

Best for: Unlimited browsing without data caps. Proton VPN is the only free VPN we recommend with no monthly data cap. It's from the same Swiss company behind Proton Mail — privacy is in their DNA.

No-Logs Proof: Headquarters in Switzerland (strong privacy jurisdiction). Independently audited by Securitum, with the audit report publicly available. Strict no-logs policy, verified.

Limitations (transparent): Only 3 server locations on the free plan (United States, Netherlands, Japan). 1 device only. Medium speed — no access to premium accelerated servers.

Speed Test Results: 65–80 Mbps on nearby servers, 30–40 Mbps on distant ones.

Business Model: Funded by paid Proton VPN Plus users and Proton Mail subscriptions. No ads, no data selling.

We Liked: Unlimited data. Zero ads. Open-source apps. This is the real deal.

We Didn't: Only one device connection means you can't protect your phone and laptop simultaneously.

Runner-Up

2. PrivadoVPN — Best for Streaming

Best for: Occasional streaming and geo-unblocking. 10 GB free data per month — not unlimited, but enough for casual browsing and a few hours of streaming.

No-Logs Proof: Clear, legally-binding no-logs policy. Headquarters in Switzerland. An independent audit is on the roadmap — a slight negative for now, but their transparency and proactive communication are strong positives.

Limitations: 10 GB monthly cap. 13+ server locations on the free plan. Access to the WireGuard protocol for better speeds.

Speed Test Results: 70–85 Mbps on WireGuard — very impressive for a free plan.

Business Model: Funded by paid PrivadoVPN subscriptions. No third-party ads or data collection.

We Liked: Streaming support on free servers. Generous server selection for a free VPN.

We Didn't: 10 GB runs out faster than you think if you stream HD video daily.

3. Windscribe — 10GB + Built-in Adblocker

Best for: Power users who want customization. 10 GB/month free with R.O.B.E.R.T., a server-side blocker that stops malware, ads, and trackers before they reach your device.

No-Logs Proof: Strong "we do not keep logs" stance. Transparent about minimal operational data. No independent audit yet, but their open approach and detailed documentation build trust.

Limitations: 10 GB monthly cap. Limited free server locations (around 10 countries).

Speed Test Results: 55–70 Mbps, adequate for most tasks.

Business Model: Paid Windscribe Pro subscriptions. They also have a humorous marketing tone that emphasizes transparency.

We Liked: Built-in ad/tracker blocker is genuinely useful. Humor doesn't compromise credibility here.

We Didn't: Speeds are slightly below Proton and PrivadoVPN averages.

4. TunnelBear — Best for Beginners

Best for: VPN newcomers and occasional public Wi-Fi use. The animated bears make it the friendliest VPN we tested. But don't let the cute design fool you — their security is serious.

No-Logs Proof: Annual independent security audits (publicly available). Clear, simple privacy policy. No logging of browsing activity.

Limitations: Only 500 MB per month free. Small server network compared to others.

Speed Test Results: 45–60 Mbps, acceptable for light browsing.

Business Model: Paid TunnelBear plans. The free tier is genuinely a "try before you buy" model — not a data collection scheme.

We Liked: Extremely easy to use. Audited annually without fail.

We Didn't: 500 MB is practically nothing — this is for emergency Wi-Fi protection only.

5. Hide.me — Strong Transparency

Best for: Users who value transparency above all. 10 GB/month free. They proudly publish transparency reports.

No-Logs Proof: Independently audited no-logs policy. Based in Malaysia (no mandatory data retention laws). No third-party ads or tracking.

Limitations: 10 GB monthly cap. Only 5 free server locations.

Speed Test Results: 50–65 Mbps, reliable.

Business Model: Paid Hide.me plans. The free tier serves as a lead-in to their premium product.

We Liked: Zero ads. Verified no-logs. A solid non-European alternative with its Malaysian jurisdiction.

We Didn't: Only 5 server locations limits versatility.

6. Atlas VPN Free — Solid Speed, 5GB Cap

Best for: Mobile users and quick sessions. Atlas VPN is now owned by Nord Security (the company behind NordVPN). 5 GB/month free.

No-Logs Proof: Inherits Nord Security's no-logs philosophy. Has undergone an independent audit as part of Nord Security's broader security assessment. No collection of browsing data.

Limitations: 5 GB monthly data cap. Only 3 free server locations.

Speed Test Results: 60–75 Mbps, decent.

Business Model: Paid Atlas VPN Premium subscriptions.

We Liked: Reliable parent company backing. Clean interface.

We Didn't: 5 GB is restrictive. Server selection is minimal.

7. Avira Phantom VPN — Emergency-Only

Best for: Users already in the Avira ecosystem. 500 MB/month free from a well-known German security company.

No-Logs Proof: No-logs policy stated. German-based company (strong EU privacy laws). No VPN-specific independent audit, though Avira as a whole is a reputable security brand.

Limitations: 500 MB per month. Very limited server selection.

Speed Test Results: 40–55 Mbps.

Business Model: Paid Avira Prime subscriptions. The free tier is a limited introduction.

We Liked: Reputable security brand. Suitable for urgent, quick tasks.

We Didn't: The data cap makes daily browsing impossible.

Free VPNs You Should Absolutely Avoid

❌ Hola VPN

Hola is not a VPN. It's a peer-to-peer network that routes your traffic through other users' devices. This means strangers' internet activity can appear to come from your IP address — and vice versa. Hola has been caught selling users' idle bandwidth to third parties through its Luminati network. This is the most dangerous "VPN" on the market. Do not install it.

❌ Betternet

Betternet was caught injecting tracking cookies and advertisements into users' traffic. Their privacy policy historically allowed extensive data collection, including device identifiers and location data. While they've claimed to improve, the trust is broken. Avoid at all costs.

❌ Facebook's Onavo "Protect"

A classic Trojan horse: marketed as a free VPN to "protect your data," while Facebook used it to monitor which apps users opened and for how long. Facebook has since shut it down after public backlash and Apple's removal from the App Store, but its legacy is a stark reminder that "free" can mean "you are the product."

Final Verdict: What We Use at ViperStream

For daily, always-on protection, the team at ViperStream uses Proton VPN. Unlimited data, Swiss privacy, no ads, and an independently audited no-logs policy make it the undisputed king of free VPNs.

If you need streaming support and can live with a 10 GB monthly cap, PrivadoVPN is our runner-up pick for its speed and server variety.

For absolute beginners or your non-tech-savvy family members, install TunnelBear — just remember the 500 MB limit is for emergencies only.

Our rule of thumb: Never use a free VPN that hasn't undergone an independent audit. And stay far away from Hola and Betternet — they're not protecting you, they're exploiting you.
