System Impact: The lightest in our test. Boot time increased by only 3%. File copy operations showed no measurable slowdown. You'll forget it's installed.

The Elephant in the Room — Jumpshot: Avast's parent company sold user browsing data through Jumpshot between 2014 and 2020. They shut down Jumpshot in January 2020 after public outcry. What's Included: Real-time protection, firewall, ransomware shield (controlled folder access), network protection, and family safety controls. All built into Windows. No installation. No accounts. No pop-ups.
System Impact: Minimal. Defender is deeply integrated into Windows and optimized for performance. In our tests, it had the lowest system impact of any antivirus — including Bitdefender.
What's Missing: No VPN. No password manager. No dark web monitoring. These are premium features bundled into Microsoft 365 subscriptions. But for pure antivirus protection, Defender is complete.
Verdict: For most home users — people who browse the web, check email, use Office, and stream video — Microsoft Defender is already enough. You don't need to install anything else. A third-party AV would only add complexity, potential privacy risks, and system slowdown.
